My Current Bio and Approved Headshot

Kristen Jeffers was one of the first people to bring the concept of Black urbanism to the internet and social media in 2010 by purchasing and launching The Black Urbanist, which in its 11th year continues to be a resource for Black urbanism at the intersection of feminism and queer/trans life. She is the author of the forthcoming A Black Urbanist Journey to a Queer Feminist Future a memoir/manifesto for Black queer feminist urbanism. She is the creator of the K. Jeffers Index for Black Queer Feminist Urbanism, a guide, measure and data center to assess the thrivance of black queer feminist urbanist people globally and curator of the Black Queer Feminist Urbanist Book Cannon and School. Finally, under the banner of Kristpattern, she shares her own journey into sustainable fashion and invites others to do the same. A sought-after public speaker, workshop leader, and cultural critic,  she makes her home with her partner just outside of Washington, DC, and is a proud and concerned native of Greensboro, North Carolina.

She holds a Master of Public Affairs focused on community and economic development from the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and a Bachelor of Arts in communication with a concentration in public relations from  North Carolina State University.

She has presented at the annual gatherings of the Congress for New Urbanism, YIMBYTown, Walk Bike Places, CityWorksXpo, APA Virginia, NACTO, and to communities around the US and Canada, using her personal story to illustrate what land use and planning really mean and really do, plus encourage practitioners, both young and old in best practices. She is a Streetsblog Network member and has also contributed articles to CityLab, Greater Greater Washington, [Greensboro] News & Record, Yes! Weekly, Grist, Next City, Better! Towns and Cities, Triad City Beat,  Urban Escapee and Urbanful and appeared on in the New York Times and several NPR affiliate stations (KCUR, WAMU and WUNC)  as a commentator and expert.

These calls are free-of-charge and will help us both determine if your event date, COVID-19 protocols, and budget for travel/honorarium are compatible with our goals.

Have Me Coach You One-on-One — Have you considered doing one of my intensive tracks on Patreon and not been sure that it applies or just want to do it in one or two sittings and get feedback every few months? Do you want me to walk you through building your arts/creative/community-focused venture? Do you want to learn how to get started with yarn and fiber? Get a more traditional urban planning or government job? Email me back and let’s sit down for a VIP session. These start at $250 an hour and you leave with a plan in hand. We can also add more meetings and there is a volume discount available for this. (Hint, this is a great thing to have your work or parents or a generous friend pay for on your behalf).

Have Me Come Teach One of My Workshops — Any of the workshops I mentioned above, as well as some of my other one-on-one coaching options around career, business development, and learning how to do things with yarn and fiber, are available in small group settings, virtually and in-person. Reply back if you’re interested in having me work with your small group.

Have Me on Your Project Team/Advisory Council  — I am more than happy to be a subcontractor on your equity studies, equity commissions, comprehensive plan reviews, audits, or any other study, plan, or similar activity. Know that when I show up on a team like this, I will be coming with the hard questions and demanding you do what it takes to provide the right answers and appropriate actions. I miss seeing you all and I think with everything that’s going on, my voice, whether on a big screen or your Zoom screen, could be exactly what you or your organization or agency or city needs to take the action that’s needed to get our world back on track.
